Why We Race

On Saturday August 23rd, 2014, AdKore Rehabilitation Center will be hosting our 2nd 5k & 10k walk/run “Fight the Fire of Cancer” and we want you to join us & make a difference in the lives of victims and families affected by the many forms of cancer.

Cancer is the second most common cause of death in the US; it accounts for about 1 of every 4 deaths. The reality of this tragic illness has hit home to many special families; one of these families, dear to us, was the Biferies.

In the spring of 2007, Daniel Biferie was admitted to the hospital due to breathing problems. Twelve hours later he was fighting for his life in the ICU with a massive tumor pressing on his lungs and heart. Hodgkins Lymphoma is one of the curable cancers his parents Bob and Suellen were told. After some time in the hospital, he was released to continue chemotherapy and radiation as an outpatient. He responded well to the treatments and the family was elated but unfortunately, the cancer returned. They went to MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston where Daniel qualified for a clinical trial with a promising new drug. After six months of treatment in Texas he was cancer free! Following a second bone marrow transplant, he received treatment at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa and after 100 days he was released. But less than two weeks later, he was having trouble breathing again. At the hospital they put him on a respirator and as they transferred him back to Moffitt in Tampa, Daniel became unconscious. He never regained consciousness and died three days later. Cause of death was septic shock related to the transplant.

Meanwhile his dad, Bob, was in remission from his own cancer battle. Earlier that year he had a kidney removed because it was malignant. They thought they got it all, but they were wrong. He began treatments, but could not beat the progression of cancer cells. Six months to the day after his beloved son died, he too succumbed to this dreadful disease. Bob was a retired firefighter for the City of Orlando and he served on the board of Fish Memorial Hospital Foundation and the Orlando Firefighter’s Pension Fund. He left behind his wife of 36 years, Suellen, his daughter Kelli, and infant grandson, Emerson.

In honor of our former patients, Bob and Daniel Biferie, AdKore Rehabilitation Center would like you to help us in our fight on cancer in reflection of the Biferies’ story and the many others that have touched our hearts. The event will take place at the Stone Island community in Enterprise, FL.

MeStrong

ME STRONG is an organization that was started by a group of friends to support their friend during her third battle with cancer. In July 2011, at the age of 43, Linda Ryan received the frightening news that she had recurring cervical cancer. Just a short time before her diagnosis she trained and successfully completed her first marathon. It is Linda’s belief that it is no coincidence that she began this journey fighting cancer in the best shape of her life. In March 2012, after 8 rounds of chemo, she received the good news that she is cancer free. Her doctors all agree that her physical shape played a large part in the success of her treatment. Since ME STRONG’s inception in 2011, the organization has given thousands of dollars to support the friends, families, and individuals battling cancer through the power of friendship. ME STRONG is also committed to donating funds for research to fight cancer.
